Following The Scenic Route
But... what is it all about? The Scenic Route is about living a happier, slower, healthier, more sustainable, ethical, and stylish life. It's a constantly evolving platform for me to document art, travel, interior styling, recipes, inspiration and (at the risk of sounding like an X factor contestant...*cringes) my journey.
After many years of living in cities and working in the fashion industry, two years ago my partner and I made a tree change and moved to Emerald Beach, a beautiful spot on the north coast of NSW, about 7 hours north of Sydney. This was for a number of reasons, but mainly a growing level of apathy for a stressful consumer oriented life, and asking ourselves the question - is there something more to life than this? The answer was a resounding yes. Goodbye to the grinding monotony of commuting, traffic, pollution and being crammed like sardines into a tiny apartment. Hello to trees, fresh air, space and a slower more thoughtful life.
This move signifies a career change for me. I have become disillusioned with the fashion industry and don't feel it is sustainable in it's current form. The more I learn about the negative impacts on the environment, the huge levels of waste, the human rights abuses and what seems like a constant race to the bottom in terms of quality and price, the more I don't want to be a part of it (I highly recommend watching the film "The True Cost"). There are some amazing ethical fashion brands out there doing wonderful things but I am ready to move on to something new.
So what now? I originally dreamed of being an artist and started a Visual Arts degree before becoming convinced that I needed to do something more practical and studied Fashion and Textiles... Is it too late to go back to my original dream? I hope not.
I love adventures and taking the path less travelled, for me the journey is the best part and I feel the same way about life. I have finally learned to enjoy the present, whether it's amazing scenery, beautiful food, a wonderful book, an inspiring craft project, a gardening session, a long walk or just pottering at home. I want to keep a record all of the elements I love and use my creativity from an honest place, to explore and experiment, and to take a deep dive into something new without setting boundaries.
I came across a quote that really resonated with me - "Happiness is in the journey, not the destination" and although I don't normally go in for inspirational new age quotes, the more I think about it the more I lIke it, and feel it encapsulates what the Scenic Route is all about and what I want to do with this project.
The journey begins, and so
Farewell, farewell to you who'd hear
You lonely travellers all
The cold north wind will blow again
The winding road does call
*with thanks to Fairport Convention :)
